Crowd sourcing

today's crowd sourcing lecture was very interesting. I had heard of a few of the examples, but seeing all that's being done through creative crowd sourcing was awesome. My small group came up with some interesting ideas for video and art installation projects that could be done with crowdsourced content. One of my favorites was one involving action camera sports footage. My idea was to collect footage from multiple perspectives of people playing different team sports and edit it all together to make it seem like they're all playing in the same game.

R2 response

This weeks readings brought to my attention yet another science I hadn't even thought about before. Acoustic ecology is a very interesting concept. I hadn't really thought before about how the things around me relate to me and each other sonically. at the end of the video, when the sound stops and all you can hear is whatever is going on around you, I did notice that most of what I heard came from machines. All i could really hear was the ac unit outside buzzing and a clock ticking in the other room.

Response to R1 media

These TED talks and the article on Synesthesia were very interesting to read/watch. I had never really known a lot about these different forms of perception before and didn't realize that there were people who perceived the world in this way. I wish I could experience these sensations so as to better understand them. Cynetics, makes a fair amount of sense to me, because it can be shown visually through scientific processes, but synesthesia is harder to comprehend, because all I really have to go on are the accounts of others who are able to experience it.

72 Hour Media Fast

This media fast might have been the hardest thing I've done in a Film Studies course to date. I've spent plenty of time "off the grid" before, but it has always been done while engaging in some of my favorite activities, such as hunting, fishing, and camping. to cut myself off from media without being in the woods was a whole different experience. I found myself becoming more aware of my surroundings, if for no other reason than that I was staring at the decorations on the walls a lot. I couldn't stand the lack of music in my house, so I played my banjo a lot more than usual. on the third day, I spent a lot of time on the water. I had grown tired of trying to find other things to do that didn't involve media, so I excused myself from my normal surroundings and put myself into a situation where I was more used to being without and technology. It was a very interesting experience, but I don't think I'm too eager to do it again.

I have no idea what to think of that clip, but i was never bored watching it. the timing of the animation to the music made it seem as though the colors and shapes were people performing, almost dancing. It kind of felt like the images were what the piece of music would look like if you could see it.I'd be interested to know how the filmmaker made the dots and bars of light move in the middle section. I wouldn't know what would inspire a person to create this, but it was certainly interesting.
